It is reported that Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the French government regarding the use of satellite technology to monitor oil spills from ships traveling along the Sri Lankan coast.
The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has further stated that this will be effective for a period of one year and that there are 300-350 ships plying the coast of this country every day, and the traffic density is at a very high level.
