The General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawega Ranjith Maddumabandara filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the 23rd alleging that the surcharge bill included in the Order Book of Parliament was unconstitutional.
The petition was taken up again yesterday (02) before Supreme Court Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, AHM Navas and Arjuna Obeysekera.
Deputy Solicitor General Viveka Siriwardena, who appeared for the Attorney General, told the Supreme Court that 13 funds, including the Provident Fund and the Employees’ Trust Fund, would be removed from the surcharge bill.
Petitioner Ranjith Maddumabandara has requested the court to issue an order to pass the bill by a special number of parliament members and a referendum, and to issue an order stating that the surcharge bill is unconstitutional.
