It is reported that the National Child Protection Authority received nearly 10,000 complaints about child abuse cases last year.
Its chairman, Senior Lecturer Udaya Kumara Amarasinghe said that between January 1 and December 31 last year, 9,434 complaints were received by the Child Protection Authority.
It is said that 2,242 complaints related to child abuse, 472 complaints related to sexual abuse, 404 complaints related to serious sexual abuse, 51 complaints related to rape of girls and 06 complaints related to using children in obscene posts.
In addition, Mr. Udaya Kumara Amarasinghe has said that complaints have been received regarding the use of children for drug transportation, use as laborers, oppression by domestic violence, neglect, kidnapping, injury, sale of children, and not providing school education.
In 2022, the National Child Protection Authority received 7,466 complaints regarding child abuse.
Senior Lecturer Udaya Kumara Amarasinghe, Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority, said that the complaints of child abuse have been forwarded to the relevant departments to take further action.
In addition, he has further mentioned that discussions are being held to amend some existing laws to prevent child abuse.
