At present, elections are being held for the selection of the Basnayaka Nilamewarya of the main ancient temples located in different parts of Sri Lanka. Voting in these office elections is often done by the local secretaries and local Basnayake Nilames as public officials. Most of the appointed Nilames win by paying bribes to local secretaries and other subordinates to get votes. The candidate who gives the most money in the election will be given the vote. It is an illegal process.
It is reported that tomorrow (1) the election of Basnayake Nilame will be held at Saman Dewala in Alawathu, Kandy, and reliable sources say that one of the candidates who will appear for that has already negotiated to give a bribe of 3 lakhs to the divisional secretaries.
A member of an association called Radala in Kandy has discussed the arrangements for giving bribes. The first place in the betrayal of Sri Lanka to the whites is taken by the ancestors of the majority aristocratic families of Kandy. The generations at the top of those names are still engaged in the destruction of Buddhism and temples.
After tomorrow’s election, we will present the names of the candidates who gave the bribe and who received the bribe. We will report about it tomorrow or after the election, as announcing the names today is a hindrance to the election tomorrow.
