It is reported that the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has decided to submit the proposal setting the maximum retail price for eggs to the Consumer Protection Authority within this week.
It was emphasized that the cost of producing an egg is about 30 rupees and currently the daily egg production in this country is 5.8 million eggs and the daily egg consumption requirement is 7.5 million eggs.
There are currently 130,000 layer mothers and the need is 80,000. The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera has given instructions to the officials to find out the reason why the production of litters and eggs is not increasing when there are more mother animals than the requirement.
