The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Forum says that an increase in online crimes has been observed so far.
Its Senior Information Security Engineer Mr. Charuka Damunukola stated that 423 computer frauds have been reported during the year.
“There has been an increase in scams on the pretext of providing online jobs over the internet, as well as crypto-currency scams and pyramid scams in the last two months of this year since last year. 2023 1,609 internet scams have been reported to us. In this year, 110 such frauds have been reported in the month of January. 213 internet scams have been reported in February and 100 in March so far. When money fraud was reported to some of the visitors, we have given them the necessary technical support and referred them to the Computer Crime Division.”
Mr. Charuka Damunukola, Information Security Engineer, who further comments on the computer crimes that occur on the Internet,
“Incidents are being reported on the internet, threatening to release their nude photos. 775 such incidents have been reported in 2023. Along with that, 1609 incidents of internet fraud have been reported. 5,188 incidents of fake accounts being created through social media are reported. 98 incidents involving small children are reported. At the same time, 7,499 cases of unauthorized access to accounts were reported. There is a percentage increase in unauthorized access and fake accounts.”
