A STOCK OF RICE UNFIT FOR CONSUMPTION IS RAIDED.

It is reported that the Welipanna police have seized nearly 600 kg of insect-infested rice with a lorry in the Walagedara area based on information received by the Welipanna Police Station Commander Mr. Charminda Silva.

Based on the information that rice with such insects is regularly brought to a warehouse located in Matugama, Walagedara and polished through the relevant lorry, this stock of rice was found during inspection of the lorry near the said warehouse and the polished rice was then sent to Welipanna, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Darga town. Information has been revealed that it is being sold at a low price to restaurants located in other areas.

When the public health inspectors from the Matugama Medical Officer’s Office were called to inspect the rice seized by the police, it is said that the rice was removed from consumption and a large number of insects were found in it.

The driver of the lorry, a 42-year-old resident of Darga town, has been arrested by the Welipanna police in connection with this incident and the public health inspectors have sealed the lorry with rice.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Matugama Magistrate’s Court today (22).
