It is reported that the President will grant a general amnesty to a group of prisoners in prison for the 75th National Independence Day tomorrow (4).
Thus, it is said that those who are subject to amnesty will be sentenced to 40 years or more and if they have served 20 years of that sentence by tomorrow (4), the remaining time of those prisoners will be forfeited. Also, if they complete one year in prison by tomorrow (4), those inmates will be granted a 21-day amnesty and it is also reported that the remaining sentences of inmates who are serving prison sentences for non-payment of fines will be cancelled.
Chandana Ekanayake, Additional Commissioner General of Prisons and Prison Media Spokesperson announced that the prisoners eligible for amnesty will be released from prison tomorrow (4).
