As a measure to ease the pressure on the foreign exchange market, the government has temporarily suspended the import of cars except for construction vehicles and ambulances.
However, to import 03 ramps for use by SriLankan Airlines, 03 mobile maternity units donated by the United Nations Population Fund and 21 double cabs provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund, Sri Lanka and Korea in establishing the work permit system. According to the agreement reached between the Republic, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor and Foreign Employment respectively to receive a car provided for the Korean Funding Project and to provide 02 buses for the Science and Technology Human Resource Development Project funded by the Asian Development Bank. And the Cabinet has decided on 11-12-2023 to approve the requests submitted by the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policy.
Accordingly, in order to be able to import the said motor vehicles, it has been published through the special gazette No. 2366/19 dated 2024-01-11.
