It is reported that the cabinet has given permission for an emergency purchase of electricity based on the water shortage that has arisen due to the current dry weather.
Accordingly, yesterday (07) afternoon, the Cabinet chaired by President Ranil Wickramasinghe has approved the purchase of electricity from 03 private companies at a high price.
According to the cabinet paper submitted by the Minister of Power and Energy Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera in this regard, electricity is to be purchased by spending 04 billion rupees for a period of next 6 months.
The Minister has indicated to the Cabinet that due to the current crisis in hydropower production and several other problems faced by the Electricity Board, the emergency purchases of electricity have to be made.
