It is reported that the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Power and Energy Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera to establish a solar power plant in Sampur, Trincomalee, together with the Ceylon Electricity Board and an Indian company.
According to an agreement between the National Thermal Power Corporation of India and the Ceylon Electricity Board, the company has expressed its interest with the Ceylon Electricity Board to operate a solar power plant with a capacity of 135 MW in two phases.
Accordingly, as the first phase, it is planned to construct a 220-kilometer transmission line from Sampur to Kappalthura at a cost of US$ 42.5 million and it is reported that the section is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
And as the second phase, under the proposal of 72 million dollars, an additional solar power plant with a capacity of 85 megawatts will be built and it is said that a transmission line with a capacity of 220 kilovolts will be established from Kappalthura to Habarana with a distance of 76 kilometers to distribute the electricity generated from it.
