As a relief to the people who are in trouble due to the increase in value added tax (VAT), the government is focusing on the reduction of duty on many goods in April.
Since this year has been designated as an election year, it is also revealed that the government has focused on reducing the customs duty on many goods in April to avoid the unfavorable situation that may occur during the elections due to tax burden on the people.
Government sources say that relief will be provided to the people in purchasing goods during this New Year season.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade has also planned to further reduce the prices of many food items sold at Lanka Sathosa Institute.
The Ministry also says that the existing 450 Lanka Sathosa branches have been increased to 500 this year and arrangements have been made to provide goods at subsidized prices to the people.
However, in the current economic situation of the country, the burden of increasing the tax burden will have to be borne in the first quarter of this year, Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando has said in a press conference held at the Presidential Media Center. (Aruna)
