It is reported that International Women’s Day is today (08).
International Women’s Day is celebrated as an annual event recognized by the United Nations.
Women’s Day began in 1908 when fifteen thousand women marched in New York City to demand shorter working hours, better wages and the right to vote.
A year later International Women’s Day was announced by the American Socialist Party.
It received official recognition when it was celebrated by the United Nations in 1975.
The theme of this year’s Women’s Day is “Strength for Her – Progress for God”.
Under that theme, the International Women’s Day National Festival will be held today (08th) at Battaramulla Waters Edge Premises.
The Ministry of Children’s Affairs says that a special program is going to be started for women who are burdened by micro-finance loans in Sri Lanka.
It was headed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and State Minister Geeta Kumarasinghe.
