It is reported that under the guidance of the Ministries of Plantation Industries and Agriculture, a program called “North West Palm Tree Aruna” has been started by the North West Group to cultivate five lakh palm trees across the country in a period of two years.
Mr. Nimal Weeratunga, Agriculture Project Director of Northwest Group, has stated that there is a high demand for date palm and karunka in the Asian region and through this action, it is hoped to increase the local date palm harvest by four times the annual date palm yield in the next six years.
He has further mentioned that if the demand from Asian and Middle Eastern countries is exported properly, we can earn about ten million dollars a year.
