Various anti-social acts are taking place in Rakwana police area of Ratnapura district. The local residents have alleged that police officers of Rakwana police are also helping them. Meanwhile, it is also reported that 11 children have been abused in the Bodhiraja Children’s Home in Rakwan.
Reportedly, this orphanage was established on the advice and supervision of Reverend Omalpe Sobitha Thero, the founder of Embilipitiya Bodhiraja Foundation, to create mutual harmony between the Tamil people and the Sinhalese people.
It is reported that there are 17 children in this orphanage and 11 of them have been abused in this way. It is said that the husband of the warden of the orphanage was arrested on suspicion of this incident. The suspect is said to be a 60-year-old father of two. It is also reported that a girl who was allegedly sexually abused by these children was taken to Kahawatta for treatment. It is reported that they have been admitted to the hospital. It is said that the other girls will also be referred for medical treatment after taking police statements. It is reported that the suspect was remanded until March 8 after being presented to the Magistrate of Palamadulla.
This incident reveals that the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Probation and Child Protection Department as well as Rakwana Police Station Commander have been sleeping for a long time even though the government agencies that are responsible for this institution have been constantly paying attention and working to protect these children.
