It is reported that the Association of Government Medical Officers has emphasized that there is a risk of 5,000 doctors qualified to work in foreign countries leaving the country.
Its spokesperson, Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, states that the government should prepare an urgent program to avoid this situation.
“The serious matter is that there are 5,000 doctors who have completed the necessary education to work as doctors in foreign countries. With the aim of leaving the country as soon as I get a job. 5,000 is 1 out of 4 doctors in this country. The seriousness of this problem will increase in the future. What should be done by the Ministry of Health is to implement a necessary program for the group of doctors who have decided to identify the underlying reasons for this cause.
Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe has further stated that more than 250 doctors who received post-internship appointments have decided to leave the system.
