Arresting and imprisoning an innocent person by the police as government officials as revenge is a heinous crime. It is seen in many cases in Sri Lanka. Although many such incidents happened incognito, for people like Wasantha Mudalige, it was done in public. The Chief Magistrate’s Court of Aluthkade, Colombo has today (Jan. 31) ordered the release of Wasantha Mudalige, the convenor of the Inter-University Student Council, who has been imprisoned and confirmed by the court. It was by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mr. Prasanna Alvis.
Giving the relevant order, the magistrate has stated that the suspect will be released as it is revealed that he has not committed any offense under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The Magistrate also said that it was revealed that the Colombo Terrorism Investigation Division has filed charges against the suspect by misusing the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Wasantha Mudali, who was arrested and remanded under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, spent more than 150 days in prison.
