Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had been abroad for 15 years due to allegations of fraud and corruption, returned to Thailand and upon his arrival, it is reported that he was arrested, referred to court and later imprisoned.
Thaksin Shinawatra is a businessman in the field of communication. He lost power in 2006 due to corruption allegations. That was after the army seized power in the country. Thaksin was ousted from power and his ‘Thai Rak Thai’ party was banned on the grounds of abuse of power. Before Thaksin Shinawatra was arrested, he was exiled from Thailand and decided to go abroad. But in the absence of Thaksin, the Bangkok courts had also given him a 2-year prison sentence.
Thaksin was supposed to be arrested if he returned to Thailand and accordingly, Thaksin Shinawatra was arrested when he arrived at Dong Mueang Airport in the capital city of Bangkok in his private jet.
