It is reported that the captains of the Sri Lankan fishing vessels who are in the custody of Myanmar have been sentenced to 5 years in prison by a Myanmar court.
Janaka Bandara, Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Myanmar, said that the 13 fishermen who were in custody were sentenced to 3 years in prison each.
However, the ambassador has further stated that the fishermen are expected to be released under amnesty and the fishermen are in good health.
The concerned group had gone to Kalpitiya and Negombo for fishing activities in the fishing vessels Rayanputa and Lawrence in November and the number of Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested along with the two fishing vessels for violating the Myanmar sea limits and engaging in fishing activities is 15.
