It is reported that President Ranil Wickramasinghe has informed the cabinet to submit a report on the parties that do not give the necessary approval to import eggs next week.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the demand for eggs will exceed the demand during the festive season and if there is no egg production in the country to meet the demand, the Cabinet is of the opinion that the necessary eggs should be imported to eliminate the shortage. This has been said.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena giving further information.
“There is a shortage of eggs in the situation where egg production cannot meet the demand. In that shortage, inflationary pressure is created and the price of an egg increases. The current strategy in such cases is to import sufficient quantity to cover the demand and supply and present it to the market. That is the process followed by every country. If the production of one’s own country is not sufficient, if a large demand for the insufficient quantity chases a large demand for a small quantity of goods, the price will definitely rise. A fact that even a small child knows. The minister in charge of trade informed the cabinet that the State Commercial Corporation has imported a small quantity of eggs from India. Distribute them not to the market, but to hospitals, to school lunches, to the bakery industry. But he informed the Cabinet yesterday that certain forces are operating that do not give the necessary approvals. The President ordered that a full report on the relevant parties be given to the Cabinet next week.
“There are countries in the world that export eggs. India is the main exporter of eggs. If someone decides that something sent to other countries of the world cannot be brought to our country, they should give reasonable reasons for that decision.
