According to the information received by the officers of the Special Operations Division (i) of the Special Task Force yesterday afternoon (31), 03 persons who were illegally digging for gems in the Kelani Ganga were arrested during an operation carried out in the Koggala ferry area.
It has been revealed that the arrested persons are residents of Pugoda area, belonging to the age groups of 42, 43 and 45 years.
Also, the police have taken into custody a compressor machine, a water motor and several other items used for mining gems.
It has been reported that the Aheliyagoda National Gems and Jewelery Authority is conducting an investigation into this incident.
