Weather for 31 January 2023

Released by the Department of Meteorology on the morning of January 31, 2023.

The depression over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is centered around 8.1°N latitude and 85.3°E longitude, about 455 km east-southwest of Trincomalee. It is likely to move gradually towards west-northwest till the evening of January 31 and then turn south towards south-west and cross the coast of Sri Lanka in the morning of February 01, 2023.

Occasional showers or thunderstorms will occur in North, East, North Central and Uva provinces and in Matale and Hambantota districts.

In the rest of the island there will be rain or thundershowers at some places in the evening or at night.

In Eastern, Uva and Central provinces and in Polonnaruwa district, some places received mm. Heavy rains can occur at around 150. In North-West and Northern Provinces and in Anuradhapura district, some places received mm. Heavy rains above 100 are possible.

In Eastern, Uva, Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Mulathivu, Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts, the winds are blowing from time to time. Wind gusts around (50-60) are expected.

People are kindly requested to take necessary measures to minimize the danger caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may accompany thunderstorms.
