This gemstone, which belongs to the blue aranol corundum crystal, is named Serendipity Sapphire. A businessman in the Kahawatta area in Ratnapura had found this while digging a well behind his house. This natural gem is estimated to weigh 510kg or 2.5 million carats. This is the largest star gem ever found in the world. Thilak Weerasinghe, Chairman of the National Gem and Jewelery Authority (NGJA), said that the gemstone is 100cm long and 72cm wide.
Gamini Zoysa, an international gemologist who researched the gem, said it was worth about $ 100 million and was the world’s largest mineral sample.
The Gem and Jewelery Authority also says that more than 50 buyers have come forward to purchase the gem and that it is often valued by the wealthy and that it is very valuable to keep as an artefact. And that we are getting a lot of foreign exchange out of this at a time of economic hardship. It was further stated that the value of this could be much higher as there are different buyers present and this was identified about eight months ago.
