President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is also scheduled to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly on the 21st of this month, according to the Presidential Media Unit.
During his visit, he will hold bilateral discussions with a number of heads of state on a number of areas, including the economy, education and agriculture. This is the first time that the President of Sri Lanka has addressed the UN General Assembly and this is the first time that he is attending a foreign conference outside the country.
Minister of External Affairs GL Peiris accompanied the President on this visit. Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage will also join the visit. Also, Mrs. Ayoma Rajapaksa joins the tour at her own expense.
It is reported that this is the lowest delegation in recent history from Sri Lanka to attend the UN General Assembly.
