Out of the 73 reservoirs under the Sri Lanka Irrigation Department, the water capacity of more than 30 reservoirs has now exceeded 80%.
The Director of the Water Management Division of the Irrigation Department, Engineer D. Abeysiriwardena stated that if the rains continue, more reservoirs could overflow.
Therefore, he said, caution should be exercised in the use of reservoirs and canals.
Also, Director Engineer D. Abeysiriwardena points out that there is a possibility of saving water from the reservoirs for the forthcoming Yala season if rain water is used during the southwest monsoon season.
