A writ petition was filed in the Court of Appeal today seeking an order from the government to conduct a fair investigation into the burning of the Express Pearl ship.
The petition further states that no impartial inquiry has been conducted into the arson so far. The petition further seeks an order directing the shipping companies to take steps in an environmentally friendly manner to remove the contaminants, including plastic, that have been dumped into the sea and land after the sinking of the ship.
The Center for Environmental Justice has named the Marine Pollution Prevention Authority, Central Environmental Authority, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Chairman of the Ports Authority, Ports Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and 16 others as respondents in the petition.
